No Pakistani Flag Found yet Police Booked the Family for Sedition, Hindutva Mob Pelted Stones and Damages Property Belonging to Muslims

In the Chauri Chaura area of Gorakhpur, the Hindutva mob surrounded a Muslim house, pelted stones, and vandalized properties belonging to Muslim families. Kalyan Pandey, chief of the Brahmin Jan Kalyan Samiti filed an FIR at the Chauri Chaura police station demanding strict actions against the families.  

Complainant Kalyan Pandey, president of Brahmin Jan Kalyan Samiti outfit, said, “People came to know about the matter when photographs showing Pakistan flags on the rooftop of houses went viral [on Wednesday] on social media. We informed the police and went to the area.” SSP Tada said, “We will see if the houses in the photographs are of the persons named in the FIR.” Police said they were also looking for those who posted the images on social media websites.

Acting on a complaint by the Brahmin Jan Kalyan Samiti that Pakistani flags were being hoisted above two homes, the Gorakhpur police on Wednesday, November 10 booked four people on charges of sedition under Section 124 (A) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the Indian Express reported.

The two families have told the police that they had put up religious flags, which were mistaken for the Pakistan flag, said Gorakhpur Additional Superintendent of Police Manoj Kumar Awasthi. They removed the religious flags once social media posts claiming that they were Pakistan flags started doing the rounds, reported Indian Express. 

No Pakistan flag was found during a search of the two houses, the police said. The families handed over to the police four flags, which they said had been mistaken for the Pakistan flag.

Gorakhpur SSP Vipin Tada said the police were investigating the matter. Also, they were verifying the writing in Urdu found on one of the flags handed over to them.

Sharing the updates on the case, Chaurichaura police said that, “In the preliminary investigation the flag has been found to be Islamic. Nevertheless, the flag is being scrutinized seriously. As a precautionary measure, PAC has been deployed at the house of the accused so that there should be no ruckus at the house of the accused.”
