The matter was first brought to the attention of the Delhi Police around 11 am on Wednesday. Officials were informed that a six-year-old girl had been brought to a local hospital in a serious condition.

A medical report later confirmed that the minor had been sexually assaulted. In their statement to the police, family members have accused a 34-year-old neighbour of the crime.

The police have registered a case in this regard at the Mayur Vihar police station on the basis of the family’s complaint. The accused has been booked under Section 376 AB of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and Section 3(2)(v) of the SC/ST Act.

Officials confirmed that the child had been admitted to a local hospital for treatment for serious injuries. She has now been referred to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) for a pediatrician’s opinion.

The incident comes on the heels of a similar case in Nangal village in Delhi Cantonment area that triggered outrage earlier this month.

A nine-year-old girl was murdered and forcibly cremated by four individuals in Nangal village, the minor’s family alleged. In their statements to the police, family members also accused the four men of sexual assault.
